Lucas Santtana is a name which comes up over and over in new Brazilian music. And it’s always pronounced with respect. Born in Bahia in 1970 and now based in Rio, he began recording and touring with Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso in his early twenties and went on to work with artists such as Chico Science & Nação Zumbi, Marisa Monte, Fernanda Abreu and Arto Lindsay. Santtana’s work has a strong grounding in Afro-Brazilian tradition, Tropicalia and MPB with a sharp awareness of international currents. His electronic debut album Eletro Ben Dodô (1999) was followed by the baile funk influenced Parada de Lucas (2003) and the dub adventure 3 Sessions In A Green House (2006). Sem Nostalgia (2009) explored the classic Brazilian format of voice and guitar via experimental reworkings with distortions and effects, released internationally in 2011.
